The God I Was Missing

There are longings that live inside us long before we have words for them. For years, I couldn't explain mine. I loved God. I believed in Him. I grew up in church. I knew the scriptures, the songs, the teachings, and the language of faith. Yet beneath all of that was a quiet ache that never seemed to go away.

At the time, I didn't know how to describe it. Now I do. I wasn't searching for another church, another teacher, or even a better explanation. I was searching for the living presence of God.

Looking back, I realize that was one of the holiest desires my soul ever carried. I think many people know this feeling. They love God, yet something still feels unfinished. Not because they have rejected Him or lack faith. But because information alone cannot satisfy a heart that was created for relationship.

There is a difference between learning about someone and knowing them. The more I walked with God, the more I realized I didn't simply want clearer answers. I wanted closeness. I wanted to know that He was alive, not only in the pages of scripture or in stories from long ago, but in the ordinary moments of everyday life.

That longing eventually led me through a season I can only describe as a spiritual wilderness. Questions surfaced that I had quietly carried for years. What does it truly mean to know God? Can His presence still be experienced today? Is there more than simply believing the right things?

At times, those questions felt lonely. When the familiar ways of relating to God no longer satisfy the deepest part of your heart, it can feel as though you've stepped into unfamiliar territory. You may even wonder if something is wrong with you. But I've come to believe that spiritual hunger is not the enemy of faith. Sometimes it is the beginning of a deeper one.

Over time, something beautiful began to happen. I discovered that the God I thought I was searching for had never been absent. The One I longed to know had been near all along. What was changing wasn't God. It was the way I was learning to recognize Him.

I began to notice His presence in quiet moments. In prayer that felt less like reciting words and more like resting with Someone. In dreams that unfolded over years. In gentle inner convictions. In peace that arrived without explanation. In moments of unexpected clarity. In ordinary days that quietly became sacred simply because I had become more aware of Him. I realized I wasn't learning how to find God. I was learning how to live with the God who had already found me.

That realization changed more than my theology. It changed my way of living. I no longer felt that God’s nearness had to arrive in only one form. Sometimes His presence came quietly. At other times, it came through experiences so vivid and magnificent that they became part of my spiritual formation. I learned to honor both without forcing either. Both can deepen us. Both can be holy.

His presence became something I could return to every day. Not because every day felt dramatic, but because relationship with God is formed through daily nearness, while also making room for the profound and magnificent ways His presence may sometimes reveal itself.

One of the things that has become deeply important to me is helping people who feel caught between two extremes. Some have grown weary of rigid religion that leaves little room for living encounter. Others have wandered into spiritual spaces that speak freely about experiences but have become untethered from Christ. I understand both tensions.

For a long time, I felt like I stood somewhere in the middle. Today, I see that middle differently. It is not a compromise. It is a path. A path where reverence and relationship walk together. Where discernment protects intimacy instead of replacing it. Where Scripture and the living presence of God are not in competition but beautifully united. That is the path I want to continue walking.

Perhaps that's why this message has become so personal to me. I no longer believe the deepest question is, "How do I know more about God?" The deeper question is, "How do I become more aware of the God who is already with me?"

That one shift has changed everything, because once we begin to recognize His presence, we stop living as though He is distant. We begin living from His nearness.

A Reflection

Have you ever felt that quiet ache for something more in your relationship with God? Not more activity. Not more information. Simply, more of Him.

If so, perhaps your longing is not evidence that something is wrong. Perhaps it is the invitation itself. A gentle invitation to move beyond knowing about God and into living with Him.

Walk the Path of Presence

Perhaps the God you've been searching for has never been absent. Perhaps He has been gently inviting you to discover what has been true all along. Not that He is waiting somewhere far away, but that He is nearer than you imagined.

The journey is not about finding a missing God. It is about coming home to His presence so completely that you begin to live from it.
